Soundscapes
Eden Court FIrst Floor Gallery

I am delighted to be sharing this exhibition with Claire Blois. Our works are our responses to favourite pieces of music.
My paintings in this exhibition are from two of my collections: Resonance and Vocal Solace.
The Resonance paintings are rooted in my experience as a classical singer and inspired by some of the great operatic works of Handel, Purcell, Mozart, Donizetti, Verdi, Offenbach, Tchaikovsky, Puccini and Wagner.
Rather than illustrating specific operatic scenes, they hold the atmosphere of lingering moments of heightened emotion encountered in performance, and emerge from my response to aria and scene, melody, lyricism, rhythm, orchestration, character, tension, and dramatic unfolding. They distill sadness, revelation, loss, love, anger, betrayal, fear and madness.
The Vocal Solace paintings emerged from a healing process following a traumatic life experience, and are rooted in my response to the songs of the English composer Frank Bridge.
They do not represent the songs themselves, but hold their atmosphere, of searching, suspension and release, and arise from the convergence of listening and memory, the emotional resonance of music and poetry and the embodied trace of their performance.
Both paintings and songs are subdued, tender, and fragile, and helped me accept my shifting identities and showed me that incredible growth can come from difficult challenges.
